Crystal clear & insider tip: Everything you need to know about Lake Bolsena
About Lake Bolsena
Yes – Lake Bolsena is one of the cleanest lakes in Italy. This is partly because there are no large industrial plants around the lake and the region is strongly committed to environmental protection. Regular checks confirm the excellent water quality – the lake has met the criteria of the EU Bathing Water Directive for years.
Definitely – swimming in Lake Bolsena is not only permitted, it is a real highlight. The water is pleasantly warm in summer, very clear and invites you to take a dip at numerous public bathing spots. The banks are often shallow, making them ideal for families with children. Popular bathing resorts include Capodimonte, Marta and Bolsena itself.
Absolutely. The lake is not only scenic, but also culturally exciting. In addition to idyllic villages with medieval charm and small restaurants, there are two islands – Isola Bisentina and Isola Martana – that hold mysterious stories and historical ruins. Those who like to be active can also go sailing, stand-up paddleboarding or explore the area by bike.
Lake Bolsena is home to a rich variety of wildlife. Particularly noteworthy is the eel, which is traditionally caught and prepared in the region. Pike, carp and black bass can also be found in the lake. Birdwatchers will also get their money's worth: herons, cormorants and many other water birds can be observed around the lake. If you're lucky, you might even spot turtles or dragonflies close to the shore.
